Rhetoric

Enough is enough...

Do you think I’m impressed?

Multi-syllabic is your speech,

A lecture for the years.

*

You rant. You rave.

To the crowds that gather,

Your message is slathered —

With big words. Well, congratulations.

*

Yet all I hear is your judgements.

Your lecture is long

Your opinion clear.

*

But your message is hazy —

Watered down, milky, and toxic.

With your biases as your venom,

You spit poison darts with precision,

Hitting your target, fueling the fire.

*

Their hearts you reach —

Only because they’re as dark

And tainted as your own.

*

Your poison infiltrates their veins,

Mixing with their own venom of hatred.

Righteous and mighty, you gather.

A crowd of hypocrites

Marching the streets.

*

The blood of your children

You smear over the doorposts.

Like a neon sign, flashing vividly —

Your hate you wear like a badge of honor.

*

Righteous and mighty, you gather.

Hypocrites, this crowd.

Serving your pagan gods, you hide

Beneath your hoods.

*

And as you march, your speech

Gains volume. Your words

Gain syllables. Your Wisdom

Loses the battle. To your ignorance.

*

So, do you still think I’m impressed?

Multi-syllabic is your speech,

A lecture for the eons.

You rant. You rave.

To the crowds that gather,

Your message is slathered —

With big words. Well, congratulations.

*

Yet all I hear is your ignorance.

Your lecture is long.

Your opinion clear.

*

But your message is haughty,

Hateful and full of venom.

*

So, no. I’m not inspired.

Your words do not impress me.

Your speech is wasted.

Your lecture lost.

*

Go back to your hordes of hypocrites —

You’ll be welcomed there.

Until they find another,

And then, they’ll slaughter you

The way you do your children.

*

His message is lost on you.

And your own is lost on me.

*

No. Your big words do not impress me.

For in your vanity, you’ve forgotten

Wisdom, insight, and sanity.

My first thoughts while reading this turned toward the politics we've endured since 2016 & the horrible rhetoric that's been spewed forth. But that tends to be closer to monosyllabic & an avoidance of any kind of impressive language. The rhetoric is more about persuading with bluster than forming any kind of coherent argument. Far more pernicious are those who do form coherent arguments in the cause of bigotry & hatred. In our denomination we have endured over 50 years of academics justifying the condemnation of LGBTQIA+ & only now that it appears that's about to change, the politely termed "Traditionalists" have left to form their own hate group without any call to conscience from progressives. Using the cloak of academia & logic to justify & persist in treating others who have done neither them nor anyone else any harm as less than, sinful, evil, "an abomination" is sickening in the utmost.
