Reliving Memories

A poem and a great song

By Rasma RaistersPublished about a year ago 2 min read

She almost didn’t stop,

she hadn’t been this way in so long,

but there she was in front,

of the bar where she and her friends used to meet.

The last time it was when her last girlfriend,

announced that she’d be getting married.

Now all her friends,

were settled down with lives of their own.

They still kept in touch,

but nothing was the same.

So impulsively she walked on in,

the bar was just the same,

Rob the bartender waved to her,

giving her his most brightest smile.

The piano player was still keeping everyone entertained.

She walked on back to what was their table

and sat down with a sad smile.

As she sipped her glass of wine,

she looked about at the place.

There was a young woman sitting at the bar,

splashing tears in her martini,

a couple sat mesmerized by each other -

their drinks untouched.

Then she noticed an old man,

he too was sipping some wine,

with each sip he looked like he was going back in time.

So she leaned forward and took a sip of her wine

Then closed her eyes and saw it all,

the faces of her friends,

as they were carefree and happy -

just having fun.

The piano player began playing some nostalgic songs

and her heart began to ache.

She had had no luck in love so far

and loneliness overtook her.

When she came out of her thoughts,

she noticed that the old man,

had been watching her with curiosity.

He lifted up his glass to her and she to him.

Then making a spontaneous decision,

she got up to go and join him.

They introduced themselves

and the old man told her,

that it was the bar where he and his wife had spent their first anniversary,

when money was short and it was the best they could do.

Twenty years later the angels came to take her

and today was her birthday.

Her eyes misted over with tears

and they ordered another glass of wine.

The piano man played all of his special requests

and they sat exchanging some thoughts.

After the wine was finished,

the old man got up to go.

She followed him out the door,

to see that it was a magical night.

The stars spread far and wide,

the moon full and lovely.

She was about to ask which way he was going,

when a young woman,

with a friendly smile hurried up to him.

Turned out she was his daughter

and that her dad came here on special occasions,

on evenings when his heart was full.

Mostly for the songs that the piano man played

and so linking her arm through her father’s -

they turned to walk home.

The old man looked back more time,

to wish her luck

and perhaps they’d meet one evening,

in the bar again.

She watched them walk away

and knew that she wouldn’t come back.

It had just been a moment of nostalgia

and it was time to be getting back.

As she walked along,

she looked up at the night sky

and thought of the old man,

of romance and of what a wonderful world this was.
