An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished about a year ago 1 min read
René Magritte, "Collective Invention," 1934

A single decision can change whole worlds

Tradition, convention, custom, habit

Into disarray by defiance hurled

Insist that strict confines we inhabit

The day cannot commence with dim twilight

The centaur cannot have an equine head

A hero’s agony must not delight

What fair princess takes the monster to bed?

A story that we cannot comprehend

Might briefly dazzle or divert the mind

But if we cannot tell middle from end

We will quickly leave the odd mess behind

Even strange fantasies obey the rules

Inverse mermaids get expelled from their schools

Ekphrastic

Great job! Makes me want to write a story where inverse mermaids come out at twilight to go to the princess’s wedding to the monster
