In the distance a light emerges
twinkling softly in the dark
At first, mistaken for the stars
The closer you get, the further it seems
Beckoning you to keep walking
Slowly, softly, quietly,
The lantern calling from afar
The owls coo from the tree tops
They know something you do not
"Hush", you whisper to yourself
Not a breath, a sound, a peep,
"Crunch" the leaves beneath your feet
The light flickers softly
It hears you in the darkness
Your breath, your heart, your trembling skin
Closer still, you're almost there
The lantern creeping in
You catch your breath with one last step
The light flickers again
It's taking shape on a tall frame
A face... a square... a ruin...
It's alive, it breaths, it reaches for you
The lantern flickers one more time
Calling out your name

A complex life shared in prose.
