Outside Of Everything

A Villanelle Inspired By Words, Events And A Bouke de Vries Image

By Mike Singleton 💜 Mikeydred Published about a year ago Updated about a year ago 1 min read
"Still life with kingfisher" by Bouke de Vries

Introduction

Another personal poem, inspired by that image, something that happened on Vocal this morning, and these lines from Bob Dylan's "Joey" that perfectly describes me:

Always on the outside of whatever side there was

When they asked him why it had to be that way, “Well,” he answered,

“just because”

I am not down, I am pleased that these things came together to create this sad poem.

The music is "Human Touch" by Bruce Springsteen to accompany this villanelle.

This is the fourth poem that I have written inspired by the images of Bouke de Vries

Outside Of Everything

❌🪦🧱🖤🧱🪦❌

I Will Always Be On The Outside

Shunned And Feeling Ignored, Invisible

All I Am Feels So Trivialised

🖤

No One Noticed, But Today I Cried

The Kingfisher Stole One More Bauble

I Will Always Be On The Outside

🖤

I Believe In Me, I Have My Pride

But Locked Out, Things Feel Impossible

All I Am Feels So Trivialised

🖤

Maybe I'll Turn Round, Away I'll Ride

My Gushing Flow Become A Dribble

I Will Always Be On The Outside

🖤

My Flowing Tears Many Will Deride

My Final Words A Blurry Scribble

All I Am Feels So Trivialised

🖤

Maybe It's Time To Say My Goodbye

Even Write A Farewell Epistle

I Will Always Be On The Outside

All I Am Feels So Trivialised

Your work on Vocal is beautiful and thought provoking. I am sorry that you had to experience something on Vocal that made you fee trivial. Their loss for not understanding your writing and stories.

Here's the thing. Feeling down always seems to give you inspiration, and it helps to get those feelings out. Also, I think we have those moments, but you'll never be the outsider.

I am sorry you've felt your work was trivialized, and glad that you're letting it out in this piece. I'm also glad you chose to create a villanelle, as you have a real talent for the form, not to mention the fact that you were the poet who piqued my interest in it. Well done, Mike, and please keep sharing!

Writing poetry or stories is a great way to express one's feelings and getting them out and feeling better about themselves. Great work on yours.

A wonderful poem, and based on the replies, glad you’re feeling better having written it

Yes, feel validated in this emotion. It should never be trivialized-but unless someone else feels that sting, they can’t understand it. I feel exactly what you have described here in your poem. I am sorry for that and moved because I am not alone. Your talent alone is enough. Your talents blended with your transparency - masterful!! Hang in there, friend ❤️

Feeling on the outside can be one of the most scarring of emotions. A thought-provoking piece, Mike.

I know very well that feeling of being always on the outside. Not fun but it usually turns out to be only in my head... Thanks to you, I've just discovered Bouke de Vries and feel completely floored with the beauty of his works.
