One Day, They Leave

For dad

A difficult truth to fully conceive

One day, they leave

Ominous and foreboding, it looms

Uninvited, it settles into the room

Like the distant roar of a thousand bees

Like a hair-raising autumn breeze

Psst, listen, despite what you wish to believe

One day, they leave

It will still take you by surprise

When that fateful day arrives

I thought we had more time, you’ll scream

Beg and plead to be released from this hellish dream

What did I do wrong? Are you mad at me?

Until it dawns that life gives no guarantee

When life whispers back, and nothing is more humbling,

A gentle reminder, I don’t owe you anything
