Once

Long Ago

you crawled inside my being

nestled underneath my skin

taking in the air I’m breathing

like an identical twin

consuming my attention

memories like bullet holes

tearing through my best intentions

eating pieces of my soul

hiding underneath my eyelids

seeing everything I see

reigniting past love again

hidden parts inside of me

like a knife carving me open

revealing emotions left unseen

healing the parts that I have broken

loving unlovely parts of me

then as quickly as it started

you began with someone else

incomplete I’m brokenhearted

abandoned, left upon a shelf

lost in what we once called love

holding the remnants in my hands

hoping one day, the one I dream of

will be exactly as I planned
