On My Father's Shoulder
There was a heavenly world that disappeared
I felt so blessed, so free and clear,
When Dad lifted me, the world was near.
Everything seemed small and within reach,
No worries about falling as he was strong and dear.
No sounds of barking dogs or ghost shadows at night,
having Dad around, everything felt all right.
When I slept by his bed, I knew he was awake,
He’d hear me if I called and eased my fears away.
But then his time came, and he had to go,
He left with open eyes, and since then, I’ve felt the blow.
Now I can’t sleep without a light,
Since my true light has taken flight.
May you shine on in heaven’s sky,
The brightest star way up high.
I wish I could be as good as you,
But no one compares, and that’s so true.
You were the best, and always will be,
In my heart, you’re forever with me.

My father was tall, over 6 feet, and a strong man. My favourite game and time spent with him was when he would lift me and let me sit on his shoulders. As a small child, I felt so proud to be up high, and when he walked down the street, I could see and touch the leaves of the trees. It was a blessing and a memorable experience for me. I hold a treasure trove of memories from our time together, and this is one of them.
I write this to show the significance of lifting your children high in the air, as they uniquely see the world. A sense of imagination and creativity arises in their minds because they have no fear of the big world. Instead, confidence, independence, and trust are built, which help in the social and emotional growth of the child. Thanks to my father, who spent time with me, I learned to look at the world from a different angle.
