The Prank

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished 2 days ago 1 min read
Joseph Farquharson (1846-1935) "The Blizzard"

Your feelings do not matter to winter

It has neither pity nor compassion;

No smile will its icy visage splinter

Nor will your pleas a path through it fashion

How pure and clean we find white things to be

Fresh and unspoiled, they exude cleanliness

But whiteness can steal the power to see

Obliterated by snow, relentless

The pristine pallor of a blizzard’s face

Is starkly beautiful, none can deny

For it does every sign of life erase

Thus does its rage the will to write deny

Winter is a cold, lifeless page, left blank

Meaning making spoils whiteness; that’s its prank

Ekphrastic

A prank of the snow on us trying to find meaning in it. Relentless in its cold self.

  • Wow in Asian culture White represents purity and is thought of respectfully. I love how each stanza become more powerful. Bravo
