O’ Glorious Gloucester Tree!
Carolina Borges‘ 500 Reads Haiku Challenge

Your green hands outstretched
to the sky, trunk arrow straight
Age old Sentinel.

Trusty leather thongs
climb up… round and round the trunk
slippery, tree sways.

This Haiku and Senryu were inspired by vivid memories of visiting the Gloucester Tree (a giant karri, Eucalyptus diversicolor), in Western Australia, ‘a few years ago’, back in the ‘80’s. I’ve always loved lookouts and this was one ‘with a twist’! On that mizzley day, I was young and foolish enough to wear my favourite leather toe thongs to climb to the fire lookout platform, 61m above solid ground. I’m still foolish but no longer young. I detected no fires that day, but I sure enjoyed searching for them as I swayed in the tree canopy.

Written for the challenge below… thanks to Sandy Gillman and her haiku, “A Love Haiku to the Beach” I was reminded of the wonders of Western Australia.

This reads like a tribute to something sacred. ‘Green hands outstretched’ and ‘Age old Sentinel’ gave me chills. I’m working through all the entries now, and this one brought a sense of reverence and awe I didn’t expect. Thank you for sharing both your words and your memory of the Gloucester Tree—it truly came alive.
Nice work, Angie
