My Jacaranda

A poem about my favourite tree in Sydney

There is a tree

On the other side

Of the world

That crossed oceans

And cultures

To stretch

Its branches towards

Another sky

It made its home

On soil humming with songs

From an ancient Dreamtime

Soaking up hope

From a land far from home

Beneath the relentless sunshine

An ordinary tree

Unkempt and green

Unremarkable all year

Except in Spring

When it bursts flowers

Covering streets a purple haze

Delighting locals and tourists

Lilac flowers

Reminding people

far from home

That they too can

sink their lives into a land

Rich with opportunity

And flourish there

Let’s not suffer in silence. Let’s use our words. Let them drip from the screen to move our hearts, challenge our minds, and enrich our time. Here are mine. Really looking forward to reading what others have to say.

Oh this was a gorgeous ode to my favorite tree (I had 2 in my yard at an old home, I loved the way that my front yard became a blanket of purple each spring), and you made the tie-in to your cultural roots & the hopeful transplanting of culture very seamless. 💜
