My Heart And Soul Renamed

By those I welcomed into my love and home

There were times I was mistaken

Believing in those delicious words,

Time and time again it was spoken

As I bathed in the words that I heard.

***

But it was lies, not an ounce of truth

And I lost so much of myself it’s true,

Naively believing those silky whispers

Pushing aside the doubts, I had a few.

***

I tore off pieces of my innocent heart

Certain it was right to give them away,

As these pieces were my pure love

Now renamed pain without my okay.

***

I never dreamed those broken pieces

Would be used to further your gain,

Those pieces of my innocent heart

You ruthlessly turned into bloody pain.

***

Still I chipped away pieces of my soul

And once again it was misconstrued,

I presented them to you as my home

Only for my soul to be horridly abused.

***

It was those very beings I trusted

Who betrayed me in my time of need,

Renaming my soul in the underworld

Smiling as they watched me bleed.

***

I attempted to recover those pieces

Of both my soul and my broken heart,

Preferring the pain and underworld halls

Than living broken and torn apart.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
