memories on a postcard

For Poppy's Prompts #2

I remember...

when the world was light

and my world was innocent

When sirens were serene

and offered a sense of wonder

like windchimes in the breeze

--

I remember...

Before the crash of reality

and the facade cracked

Before sirens were near

and offered uncertainty

like windchimes in the gust front

--

I remember...

When sandcastes were monuments

and structures of creativity

Full of hope and potential

Limitless and unrestricted

like our mortal coil

--

I remember...

Before the sandcastles

Those monuments of so much

Became so little, a sandy grave

When the tide was high

and washed them away

Like the deluge of suffering

This mortal coil offers

-

in the end, we are just

memories on a postcard

Oh, this is wonderful. Beautifully done, Paul. I loved this line, "I remember when sandcastles were monuments." Truly gorgeously done. πŸ’—

This is brilliant!! First of all, I'm loving your AI art! I'm slightly disappointed you didn't refer to the prompts/ challenge as a "thingo" again hahah, I thought that was a tradition!! This whole poem feels like a voiceover at the opening of an awesome, iconic movie! "When sirens were serene" is probably the line that struck me the most. The juxtaposition is so powerful! Also, since you have vocal+ and can fix this easily, I feel I should tell you that you missed the second i in limitless in the third stanza :) Now back to it feeling like a movie, it conjured up some vivid images of a dystopian world but also one that perhaps represents the speaker's personal life. The sense of loss and nostalgia just seeps from every line. And that ending!! That's absolutely incredible! Like tattoo worthy incredible!

Well, if I am a memory on a postcard, I want to be secreted into someone's dusty old suitcase, put on top of a wardrobe and discovered, like magical treasure, by someone, who is actually searching for something else.

  • Whoaaa, this was so poignant and emotional! Such a Paulitical take on Poppy's Prompts! 🍩πŸ₯

  • Like it was an entirely different lifetime & someone forgot to put postage on it.

I love how the tone shifts from childish innocence to adult cares and fears when the sirens and storm a tide wash everything magical and temporal away. I also love how expressive your final two lines are of this loss. Beautifully sad poem, Paul.
