Take a look at me… what do you see?
Sunshine, warmth and happiness?
No stormy weather nor scudding clouds?
Instead, a kaleidoscope of colour and chaos?
*
Like looking in mocking mirrors at Luna Park
Your perspective of me just may be warped
Stretching me like a string of spaghetti
Or squashing me like a rotten potato!
*
When you bump into me on ‘perfect’ days of smooth sailing
When not a single thing dares to put a foot wrong
Do you erroneously hype me up, a fantasy Princess
Showering beneficence all around in light and song?
*
On dreary days brimful of blustery irritants
You will be hard pressed to catch a fleeting glimpse
Of my crotchety countenance, snarky scowl, or grumpy gripes
My unsociable self hides safely away, sparing society my sour stare.
*
Does this mean that I hide my true self?
On these dull days, do I wear a mask?
These bemusing questions I sometimes ask
I hope to be honest, open and true.
*
It’s often said “What you see is what you get”
But is it fair to inflict scorn or pain
On an unsuspecting, defenceless world?
I think not! I’ll stick to showering sunshine and reigning in rain!

Beautiful! I love the last line, stick with simplicity. Good Luck! May you Win!
Loved the introspection of this. Poetry that has you trying to answer the questions posed is the best IMO GREAT ENTRY ANGIE
Great!!😊💕💗
So apt! We all have masks, but we all have choices, too. As long as we don't over-burden ourselves, I agree that "I think not! I’ll stick to showering sunshine and reigning in rain!" is the best choice. You certainly do bring sunshine into this Vocal community and to me, too, Angie! Thank you for being you.
Your poem makes me reflect on my own masks. Beautifully written and relatable.
You did an excellent job writing this. It flows so perfectly from one line to the next and the message digs deep yet maintaining a balance of optimism and humor.
This is such a lovely, reflective piece, playful yet deeply thoughtful.
No, I will not want to squash you like a rotten potato!! This poem is too good for that!! And cool too!
