Let Them, Let Me

It is what it is

Let them walk away after they say goodbye,

Let me leave them behind with my head held high.

**

Let them misjudge, misunderstand, to help them feel better,

Let me smile in delight at my new scarlet letter.

**

Let them lose their path with the decisions they make,

Let me welcome the darkness in which I now wake.

**

Let them have their say and fully unload,

Let me hit the highway and choose a new road.

**

Let them think of me as they will,

Let me honour my silence as I take my fill.

**

Let them accept the consequences of their actions,

Let me find my own appropriate reactions.

**

Let them redesign the narrative as they deem fit,

Let me deeply reflect as I quietly sit.

**

Let them rearrange the facts of my past,

Let me treasure the memories completely unbiased.

**

Let them swim in the river of remorse and regret,

Let me learn the painful lessons, then set and forget.

**

Let them raise a hand, but only just once,

Let me find the strength to say no, the courage to confront.

**

Let them surrender their voice to the consistent lies,

Let me be brave enough to walk away from a love that dies.

**

Let them experience an epiphany through their greatest loss,

Let me learn that I’m uncontrollable, my only boss.

**

Let them sow the seeds of love that’ll forever bloom,

Let me feel their commitment and give love room.

**

Let them reach out and offer me a helping hand,

Let me learn that I can accept help and no longer take a hard stand.

**

Let them be happy with whatever they choose,

Let me understand it’s not necessary a win or lose.

**

Let them lay their head upon my shoulder,

Let me treasure their company as we both grow older.

**

Let them make their own decisions with no coercion,

Let me accept their truth as that’s their version.

**

Let them dish out their dose of disrespect,

Let me teach them the real meaning of regret.

**

Let them step up to the plate and be what I need,

Let me worship their heart and stop any bleed.

**

Let them love me fully and wrap me in the safety of their arms,

Let me find shelter and security within their charms.

**

Let them ride their own highs and lows,

Let me stay my hand when I feel the need to fix how it goes.

**

Let them leave when the going gets tough,

Let me understand when enough is enough.

**

Let them, because they are not within my control,

Let me let them be, to fully accept I only have control of my own soul.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

So very contemplative. Good flow..like a stream making its way down the mountainside to rest in the embrace of the greater sea.

Colleen, this is exceptionally well crafted and definitely points out a basic truth… The only thing once can truly control is one’s own self. Great work. Congratulations on TS.
