You Didn’t Really Love Her

She was just good for your pride

Do you love her?

I mean truly, deeply, love her?

Does she curl up next to your soul and make you complete?

Does she make your heart sing and purr?

******

What is it you love about her?

Is it her gentleness, her smile,

Her beauty or the colour of her eyes,

Is it her strength, her depth or maybe her style?

******

Or is it that she lets you know you’re never alone?

Do you love her because she stands by your side,

Or is she just good for your ego, your societal positioning,

Does she boost your worth or bolster your pride?

******

So, you’ve come to the realisation that you do truly love her,

And your future is set with a love so grand,

Luck was in the draw when you two met,

And she offsets you better than you planned.

******

Now, imagine her walking down the street with another man,

Imagine the smile she keeps for him and him alone,

The love that shines from her eyes for someone else,

And watch as she’s the happiest she’s ever known.

******

How does that feel?

Do you ask yourself why?

If you were brutally honest you’d already know,

For it was you that constantly told her goodbye.

******

You left her to her own defences,

You broke her and left her to fall,

Disappeared into the sunset,

Leaving her shattered after your constant withdrawals.

******

She was yours to love, hold and cherish,

But even that was never good enough for you,

Didn’t feed your ego, your cold heart, your narcissistic soul,

And you destroyed her through and through.

******

But you forget she is made of stronger shit than all that,

She knows her worth and won’t tolerate disrespect,

She’ll pick herself up and live her best life,

She’ll not be the one full of remorseful regret.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

Thoroughly enjoyed this poem! The further I read, the more meaningful, powerful, and emotional it became.

Another sad poem. If you don't mind I would like to point out a type in realization. Nicely written but yet really sad.
