Last (I Want This To)

By Edlyn Escoto

By Edlyn EscotoPublished 4 years ago 2 min read

I don't know exactly when we first locked eyes

A party or two going on tonight, can't really remember

Just know there was a plastic cup in my hand

It was only to make me feel better as I stood alone

Hunched in a corner wishing I had brought a good story to read

Scrolling through words on a screen I can't really see

The music is blinding and the lights are deafening

I almost wish I could go home and forget whatever happened

I keep my invisible walls up as the crowd flows around me

My own private bubble, viewing screen

But then your voice cuts through the noise like a blade

Your laugh lifts me higher than the lights

So when I look up your brown eyes meet mine

We think to ourselves how stunning they are

How plain and ordinary I am

This other person won't have a second glance to spare

The truth is we both see beautiful creatures

Then look down at ourselves and see nothing but wrongs

So then one of us says so and the other corrects

And then we're both laughing and looking at anything but each other

But then we're walking together

Hand holding, hearts folding together

Like the wings of a morning dove when it's going to sleep

And our lips are together and it feels

Like time and space have collided and I know everything matters

But nothing else does

Arms around each other as the weather grows colder

I should put on a sweater but I grab you instead

Suddenly I don't know why people complain of the cold or the warmth

Because you're the perfect temperature

When I'm hot you're cold, when I'm cold you're hot

We're our own temperate bubble of perfect peace

I want it to stay that way, can you stay that way for me?

Because you make me smile wider than is possible

I pull you along just as you pull me

We know this probably won't last

It really could never

But we both hope it will and maybe, maybe that is enough

To keep our hands in each other's

For just a while longer
