Larger Than Life

I’m sorry

you’re no longer here

to keep showing off

your musical gift

G-d gave you.

I’m angry

that your dreams

of being a famous drummer

were abruptly taken away,

because of these monsters

who took and attacked you.

You had

so much to offer

just by sitting on stage,

and drumming with courage,

confidence,

and passion.

You had

many inner demons,

but you never

let them take up space

in your mind and soul;

you gave those

inner demons

a good karate chop!

You were delicate

and vulnerable,

but you were

as large and powerful

as The Hulk.

The whole planet

love and cherished you

just the way you were;

nothing else

was expected of you.

All the fur babies

will miss you

to bits and pieces;

you were so kind

and loving with them.

You were unstoppable,

because the world

had heaps

to lend you,

and you never

declined any offers

G-d granted you;

life was too precious

for you.

Thank you

for being an idol.

We’ll keep jamming,

and dancing with you

in rock music paradise!

You were

and will always be

the pure angel

that’s larger than life.

Author's notes

Yotam Haim (1995-2023) was an Israeli drummer of a heavy metal band. He was kidnapped from his home in Kfar Aza and taken to Gaza on October 7, 2023. Along with two other male hostages, he attempted to escape captivity. He and the two other male hostages were accidentally killed by the IDF (Israel Defence Forces) on December 15, 2023. He was laid to rest in Kibbutz Gvulot, Israel, his hometown.

I did not know him personally, but I’ve watched videos and read inspiring articles about him. His mother, Iris Haim, a palliative care nurse, has spoken openly about his life on multiple public forums and the news. You can find links to his life stories down below.
