One evening while preparing dinner, my grandmother looked curiously at my mother's face and inquired:

" how are you? yesterday night I saw your father throwing a kapul ( our language for cuscus/ koala) on my lap?"

That was a year after my grandfather died.

Reading between the lines, my mother responded; " I am 2 months pregnant."

My grandmother told her: " The baby sleeping inside your womb is a girl."

Mum smiled and joy filled her heart because she had 3 sons and longed for a girl.

And indeed, I was born.
