Imperfect Perfection

Celebrating our flaws

Sahil Patel (Medium writer) wrote a timely reminder that perfection is not all it’s cut out to be and in fact, perfection is not possible. Sahil invited me to celebrate my imperfections and here is the result of that kind invite.

Imperfect Perfection

Celebrating our flaws

I, like so many others, are my own worst enemy,

As I strive for absolute perfection day to day,

Delusional thinking, that this is at all possible,

But what can I say?

🌞

It’s taken me so many decades to realise,

Perfection is not a goal to ever be obtained,

Nobody, and I mean, nobody, can take the title ‘perfection’

But still I try, as it’s totally ingrained.

🥰

Instead I find all the little flaws, bumps and cracks,

Like I’m a loner, an introvert, a socially anxious klutz,

A shameful, guilt ridden, imperfect human being,

And my terrible sense of direction completely drives me nuts.

🌞

My terrible habit of comparing myself unfavourably,

Plays havoc with my insecure self esteem,

The hours I waste procrastinating,

Frustrate me until I’m ready to cry and scream.

🌞

Isolating myself to escape the hurt and rejection,

Causes my world to slowly implode,

And my tongue-tiedness mixes my words,

Until my brain is ready to explode.

🌞

Making friends in my awkwardness,

Is not conducive to succeed,

Instead I stand alone, out of place,

Never quite fitting in enough to proceed.

🌞

My biggest fault is the need for perfectionism,

But with time, patience and internal introspection,

I’m trying to learn, trying to remind myself,

That it’s perfectly fine to be myself, the imperfect perfection.

I'd like to take this opportunity to invite the Vocal Community to celebrate how beautifully imperfect they are.

Note: I chose to celebrate my imperfection in poetry form, but that was my choice. Please feel free to celebrate in any form that takes your fancy. There is no perfect form for this prompt.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
