Payment is Overdue

Now he’ll pay with his time

There is no escape from the wilderness of one’s soul,

As it brandishes the internal landscape of individuality,

The truth will always eventually win out,

And the essence dissipates into indisputable factuality.

😢

He did his time, paid for his crime, or so he thought,

But honesty was finally on truth’s side,

The falsity of his personality began to shine through the cracks,

Giving the world a perfect picture of the faults he tried to hide.

😢

He skipped the courts of punishment, a sheer effort,

On the run from the darkening manic defyingly scampering,

Destructiveness his middle name as he endeavours to eat

One last final meal before the inadvertent capturing.

😢

Pride and ego crumbled his ability to survive,

Reaching a hand towards those he recently wronged,

Begging for a chance, begging for an easy way out,

Bridges burned and now there was nowhere he belonged.

😢

The blues caught him unawares, cold and desperately hungry,

Skipping the pavements of an underworld existence,

Weak and downtrodden, he realised his time had come once again,

There was really no positivity in his resistance.

😢

Beaten back to where he was meant to be,

Friends gathering in the lowliest of low places,

Society’s promise to ensure he survives these next few years,

As he reminisces on his crimes and the abandoned faces.

😢

Tomorrow will see him give up the fight,

For the reward of the simplest of basic necessities,

Fighting the establishment will always be a lost cause,

He realised giving in was his best bet, he can’t win against the complexities.

😢

He sits within his new home, staring at the four walls,

His head hangs in shame and he understands his crime,

Broken promises flow like the river lost,

And he is now committed to paying with his time.

😢

Sunlight has deserted his existence,

As he now shines brightly within the darkening laws,

Delusional in his thinking, his adamantly sprouted innocence,

Yet again, honesty and righteousness has slipped from his cause.

😢

He has all the time in the world to ponder,

His life now forfeited for the instantaneously gained win,

Never considering his tomorrows in all his arrogance,

So he’s to forever pay for the polarity of his sin.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

So powerful! I love the flow of your words, they paint the picture of desperation in this person's narrative.

  • The tragedy of acting on impulse & the price that must be paid.

  • Well, every sin has to be paid for somehow. I loved the POV you used for this poem! Awesome work my friend!
