If tomorrow starts without me

An existential poem for Kayleigh Fraser’s challenge

By Lana V LynxPublished about a year ago 1 min read
A Magnolia painting in progress

“If tomorrow starts without me”

Is not a question.

The true question is,

When that tomorrow comes?”

When I am no more

The earth will still stand

The flowers will bloom

Life will come to no end.

The rivers will run

When I am no more

The moon will still glow

Once sets down the sun.

The birds will still sing

While the animals roar

When I am no more

When I am no thing.

The squirrel will stash

And the eagle will soar

When I burn into ash

When I am no more.

I am only a speck,

just stardust in all things

The Universe couldn’t care less for my feelings.

P.S. This is a revised version of my earlier poem, my first ever attempt at (somewhat) rhyming poetry, for Kayleigh’s challenge below. The magnolia painting is my own work in progress as well. I’d like to think that when it’s my time I’d float away on the bed of magnolia flowers.

I love the melancholia and simplicity of this piece!! We're not mourning the coming dawn where we don't rise but accepting and ready to move on. The rhythm of your poem was satisfying and made for an easy read. Great work, Lana!

This is fantastic, Lana, and very thought-provoking. This reminds me of a scene from the movie “Sleepless in Seattle”. Tom Hanks’ character is dealing with the grief of losing his wife. When asked “what are you going to do?”, he responds, “I’m going to get out of bed every morning and breathe in and out.” The world keeps marching on, with or without us.

  • I do enjoy rhyme… well done. Impressive painting too✅.

That last line, Lana. You'll be part of it so you can convince it to care!

I think the universe will care, at least some of it. Well done.

If one person remembers you, you will have left a mark and be remembered. Fear not, we all have a part to play, yet...can we all be famous and remembered? Lovely poem.

  • Well written. Though, perhaps there are at least parts of the Universe that will care!
