I Remember

Too Late

Dear Love,

I remember the feel of your breath on my skin

and the beat of my heart in my chest

I remember the way my breath trembled within

as you stole what resistance was left

*

I remember the way my name fell from your lips

as you surrendered your love, no reprise

And the depths that you went, while taking a dip

in the pools of my innocent eyes

*

I remember my will slowly becoming yours

as I gave everything that I was

I remember unlocking each one of my doors

and feeling no reason to pause

*

I remember the moment you shattered it all

for your promises were made of glass

Every moment was planned to answer your call

as your feelings for me quickly passed

*

I remember the look of shock in your eyes

as I packed, taking back what was mine

I remember the horror and shock of surprise

when I longed once again to be fine.

*

Oh, the traces of love we so eagerly carve

on our hearts, our souls and our minds

When we would have been better to cautiously starve

for another, more gentle and kind

*

Yet, the heart wants what it wants,

and that battle is fierce,

The humbled broken, now give no response

as the poison from your kiss casually pierced

For was there ever really a chance?

Goodbye,

Me

Intimacy & vulnerability accepted, used & betrayed, only to find that the betrayer will not have the last word & will never truly understand what they have lost. Heroic reclaiming of dignity & power. Well done!

Beautiful poetry! I could see the story, feel the personality and internal strength of the "narrator" in the Oh-so-many beautiful turns of phrase. Lovely. - Anneliese.
