The universe can be a tough taskmaster,
Bashing the message into every day tragedy,
Turning happiness on its rear end,
Bruising the heart in its sheer agony.
**
I liken it to a parent scolding a child,
Warning time and time again of certain threats,
When the message is not fully received,
A life is on the line if the child forgets.
**
Well I’ve been reminded of some such forgetfulness,
Like believing in matters of the heart haphazardly,
Yes, the red flags were ignored as I turned blind,
As a result my heart was shattered spectacularly.
**
The past is there for a reason,
History has taught us well,
But if that knowledge has been forgotten,
Then history will repeat and retell.
**
I know not to look to the past for comfort,
I’ve learned the importance of letting it all go,
But sometimes I test the universe to see if it means it,
And it kicks my butt because I already know.
**
So I stand corrected (once more it seems),
As the pain falls upon ears that temporarily deafen,
And the tears are a more permanent reminder, because
I learned my lesson.

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

That's the thing with me. I'm still stuck in my past. I need to learn to let go. Loved your poem!
