I Didn't Say That
Stick And Stones: Debunked
"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me"
That rhyme is often used as a retort to insults or taunts, suggesting that the speaker is not affected by the hurtful words. However, the sentiment expressed in the rhyme is often debated, as many recognize that words can indeed cause significant emotional pain and distress.
****
You use your words as weapons
and they cut me to the bone
I have to watch where I am stepping
to avoid the cutting stones
That you hurl, in your words
while I suffer in the silence
Though I don't bleed, they sting and hurt
thrown aggressively and violent
You repeat things that I never said
to control how people see me
Though these wounds have never bled
the scars I bear are hidden down deep
Changing me forever at the core
nothing left but apathy
There's no need in saying more
you never hear what I say, anyway

May neither mine nor the words of any other ever hurt thee, my friend, but only lift you up.
On many occasions, I would rather take the sticks and stones. Words can cut very deep, and some never heal or go away.
This is so poignant, Kelli. It's difficult to be surrounded by those who suppress!
Well-wrought! Though words can hurt, I always took the point of the old rhyme as to not give satisfaction to the bully. There's also the old "I'm rubber, you're glue, what bounces off me sticks to you" bit. The two retorts always seemed to work best together!
Words can truly break a heart
Aww yes, words can cut deep. Wish more people were aware of this. This is a major struggle in this world today. Great poem, with powerful emotion.
