From Newcastle To Whitby

A Three Hour Seventy Mile Lovely Train Journey

Introduction

I love going to Whitby and I used to drive but Whitby is not a place for cars, just park them and that's it. We usually stay at La Rosa (my favorite hotel ever) or Dillons (just a lovely welcoming place) and my stories about them are at the end of this.

When I tell people it takes three hours to make a seventy-mile journey they are shocked, then I tell them there are twenty-eight stations on the route and it is a pleasant and interesting journey as well, and they say that they see why. When I was looking for the station list I saw that a one-way journey is as little as Β£4.50 so not only is it a nice journey it is also cheap though some great countryside along the North Sea Coast.

The North Sea

I then thought that a list of the stations was virtually a twenty-eight-line poem, so yes it's a bit of a cheat, and a bit lazy on my part, but here it goes.

There are a lot of references which either you will know or you will have to look up.

The song is "The Last Of The Steam Powered Trains" by The Kinks with an intro from the Dennis Hopper / Kiefer Sutherland film "Flashback" which has a stunning soundtrack.
