Introduction

This is for Ellie Hoovs' July Poetry Prompt Contest, which you can find more about here:

The music is "Don't Fence Me In" by Labrinth"

Fence

⛩️🧱⛩️🧱⛩️🧱⛩️🧱⛩️🧱⛩️🧱⛩️

To Keep Me Out, You Built Your Fence

You Say You Care, But That's Pretence

You Only Want My Deference

Then You Said That I Cause Offence

🧱⛩️🧱

You Wallow In Your Decadence

With Your Total Insouciance

Say That I Should Show Penitence

You Are Incensed By My Presence

🧱⛩️🧱

You Say It's Justice You Dispense

Your Ears Are Closed To My Defence

And Your Words Don't Make Any Sense

If I Cared, This Would Be Intense

🧱⛩️🧱

But I Don't, So Let War Commence

I Will Tear Down Your Bloody Fence

⛩️🧱⛩️🧱⛩️🧱⛩️🧱⛩️🧱⛩️🧱⛩️

I guess we all have our own 'picket fences' to overcome. Good job.

Nice job, Mike. The last two lines make it seem as if the wall will come crashing down.

  • Good fences make for good neighbors, but not much else, whether fencing in or out.

Powerful! I love how this holds tension and builds, and the fact that it all rhymes makes it all the more powerful as well! It hammers home that ending sound until it finally crescendos in the last lines! Multiple ways to interpret this poem, which I like - it makes me want to know more.
