It’s only once every once in a while I think of you these days.
It’s only days that stretch for weeks, when my mind falls in this haze.
This haze that lasts for months on end, till years cry for more time.
But time stands still while life floats by and leaves the past behind.

It’s only every other moment, the ones lost in between.
It’s only every red and blue, yellow, pink, and green.
It’s just the breath blown in the wind that brings tears to my eyes,
And the time it takes each drop to fall as rain pours from the skies.

It’s only once a season, then again all season long.
It’s just the winter evenings, and summer days that go on and on.
It’s only in the autumn, when the leaves fall from the trees,
And in the sound of robin’s song floating on a cool spring breeze.

So, if you thought I spent my days with you always on my mind,
If you thought my heart searched through our past, its life-beat for to find.
If the image of me still wanting you causes you to smile,
I’m sorry, but I rarely think of you - just every once in a while.

Day 4 of Quitting
If this is how sobriety feels, maybe it’s better to go through life a little buzzed… this, along with other hits like, I want to kill myself, I wish I was dead, and I’m going to throw myself off a bridge have been the only thoughts on rotation these past few days. I promise myself that if, in a month, I still feel like this (‘this’ meaning despondent, full of rage, and simultaneously numb) I can go back to smoking. Until mid-February though? Nicotine is off the table.
