Ego of Deeming
An ode to friendship, fire, and fantastic-ness — for Rachel Deeming.
I've been meaning to express—
admiration doesn't quite cut it
I've been deeming it necessary—
adoration seems extreme a bit
~
To talk about my writer chum
exchanged respect and appreciation
So sit by the hi-hat drum
of shared literary exploration
~
No other reason, but to rhyme—
the master storyteller, she is
Peaks and pits, we've had in time
characterisation - she's a whizz
~
Long it feels — our friendship
we all know she's "fucking fantastic"
Bathory fire — shared bardship
she knows, as words bend like elastic
~
To her will, with great skill
not a shrill—just a trill
I'm always deeming our Rachel
A true creative— poetic angel
*
Thanks for reading!
Author's Notes: There's always a "notes" isn't there? This ode came from a long-standing friendship of mutual support and respect between me and the rather excellent Rachel Deeming. It was prompted by an exchange in the comments section of my poem, Semantic Satiation & Other Fatal Ejaculations, when I admitted "I kinda love you" all friend-like, and she responded in true Deeming witty style "I don't blame you, I'm fucking fantastic." to which I then responded "There was me thinking I'd overstepped the line. Nah, just feeding the Ego of Deeming. "wait...me thinks a poem is forming"" and here we are.
I also enjoyed having a more lighthearted subject to write about, as many of my Vocal+ Summer Writing Series stories and poems have been and will continue to be about rather serious topics.

Lovely!! I'm so pleased for you both <3
Rachel is all that and much more! Loved your celebration of all things Deeming!
Aww this is so sweet! It's always heartwarming to see writers appreciate other writers (also friends appreciating other friends). Good thing Rachel has a name you can make literary puns out of, lol.
Deeming it necessary! Oh yes! Well played - cracking tribute to a cracking writer. And you’re pretty awesome too 😉
She is fantastic, isn't she! Love this, Paul!
I am giggling from reading the banter between the two of you! Love our Rachel and so fitting!
Heheh, love the fun poem and the story behind it. Who doesn’t love Rachel!! 😊
I mean, she's not wrong. She's definitely effing fantastic hehehehehe. Loved this so much!
I thought this was quite brilliant, just like Rachel. Nice work, Paul! Nice word play and all-around wonderful display of support and friendship!
Love this ode to our amazing Rachel! Is especially liked: “ To talk about my writer chum exchanged respect and appreciation So sit by the hi-hat drum of shared literary exploration”… because it’s cute & I do like rhyme!🤣
I second that emotion, my liege! Deeming merits the highest esteem!
Such a wonderful ode to a wonderful writer. Loved this poem and your play on words, too. You two are bloody brilliant writers - wordsmiths divine and weavers of stories wonderfully extraordinaire.
Awesome ode to a talented writer
This was fantastic. You did have rather amazing inspiration. Rachel is one of the reasons I keep coming back to Vocal. Your poem did her justice!
We all have a little bit of all our writing and other friends in us we just don't know when they will emerge. Good job.
Would it be arrogant of me if I said I think that's the best thing you've ever written? Ha ha! I LOVE IT! I LOVE IT! It is bloody brilliant and not only am I smirking and blushing in a bashful way but I am also deeply bowing in appreciation of your wordsmithery. You, at your playful best. Did I tell you already I LOVE IT?!
Well… now you owe Stephen and me odes…it’s only fair
