The fresh smell of coffee, bacon, and eggs

The warmth of quality time

Laughter from inside jokes

Calmly catching up

Misunderstandings creep out

Voices raise

Anxiety sets in

Slowly backing away

Covering ears and closing eyes

Running to my haven, my bedroom

Heart quickens

Locking the door

Catching my breath

Loud screams and a thud

Making the call again

Police arrive

Statements given

Punished for calling

Years pass

Excitement to leave

Trepidation for new life

Freedom comes

Months pass

Calls keep coming

Fault thrown

Guilt rolls in

Pushing forward

Meeting new people

Sadness fades

New inside jokes

The fresh smell of coffee, bacon, and eggs

Laughter returns

Calmly talking about life

Relief at feeling understood

Overwhelmed by warmth and love

Happiness sets in

I am safe

This is home.

Haven't written for pleasure since my college days. Searching for that spark to get me inspired again.
