Car Lights

What happened that night is still a mystery. I wrote this freeform just before the deadline lol. This is my first submission.

From a dreamless sleep

something did pull me out.

My peaceful comfy bed

must not have been enough.

For before I knew it

I turned the door knob,

and felt the crisp cool air

outside my country house.

My parents asleep; they knew not

Of my zombie like trance

that lead to to the top

of my long driveway which lead to the road

a country highway, where cars ignored

the 55 MPH highway speed zone.

The crickets chirped their midnight songs

as I glided above the dirt

Or so it seemed, in my strange state.

I triumphantly reached the top

Where dirt turned to blacktop

I paused as my eyes settled

on tempting, moonlit yellow lines.

So into the middle I did float.

And as I felt their warm essence

on my cold, bare back

I closed my eyes once more,

and let the cricket's voices

and moon's mysterious glow

peacefully sink me back into sleep.

But for how long, I do not know.

As I laid in my black-toped bed,

a moment of clarity did lift my head

or perhaps it was the dim glow of light

that danced overtop my body.

In the far distance it seemed

like small, round, white eyes

were staring vibrantly into me

with exceeding intensity

As they grew bigger

a voice told me to "stand up"

As if I woke up from a dream,

like a puppet being pulled by strings,

somehow my legs got under me.

Subconsciously I knew; I was dreaming.

I suddenly longed for my soft bed.

So back down the long dirt path

I did go, once again.

Curiously, I glanced back where I had laid

After a loud noise came in

then in an instant faded away

but no round bright eyes did I see

Only bleak darkness remained.

And the very faint noises

of what sounded like crying.

And the rest escapes me to this day.

With the warm morning sun

creeping over my bedroom rug

I awoke in my safe, soft bed.

"What a strange dream" I thought.

Walking out of my bedroom

in a groggy-like trance

following the smell of sizzling bacon.

My mom turned to face me

With visible concern, she asked me

why the front door was unlocked,

and why she had dreamt

that her 10 year old son

had breathed his last breath

after being struck by a car.

And instantly my hair stood up

and my eyes grew wide

just like the round bright eyes did

in my dream... or was it?!

Whether coincidence in our shared consciousness,

as sometimes dreams do intertwine,

or a brave example of sleepwalking,

to this day I cannot help but wonder

If while in my foggy trance...

What if I had thought

like the old cliché goes,

That you should walk into the white light

To see where it goes?
