Burn

Mixing things up a bit with a Wanky Poem (title of my next book, probably)

the love you feel

is a measure of you

not him

your character

your courage

your heart

its infinite capacity

you are divine

+

the pain you feel

is its twin

its echo

just as loud

just as generous

much too much

and exactly enough

+

pick yourself up, dearest

feel the hurt

feed the hurt

lean into it

right into it

until you think you might crack

you won't

but it feels like you will

be brave, darling

a new you is being born

and birth hurts

we know it

+

feed it some more

until rage sparks

burns the chaff

roars hot

climbs high

cleanses

remember every little-

-insult

-mistake

-careless action

-dirty habit

smear those honeymoon pictures

with memories of him scratching his arse

+

when love hurts

hurt back

draw the sword from your gut

and swing it

when love burns you

burn right back

hotter

brighter

play chicken with the flame

laugh at it

+

the love you feel

is energy

you cannot huff it out

but you can transform it

burn with it

smelt it

hammer it

wield it

+

pick yourself up, my love

blood streaked

muddy

criss-crossed with scars

let your eyes flash

step over him

spine straight

scream if you must

yell your throat raw

but rattle your damn shield

fearless

scorch the ground

turn your face to the sunrise

and leave him in the mud

+

burn, darling

burn

+

+

+

This poem related to me, because I was here many years ago; but here I am after burning that love down, happy, secure, and in a long - term loving marriage.

  • This poem struck a deep chord with me because it so effectively conveyed the unadulterated depth of both love and suffering.

This poem is raw and savage like scorched earth in the battle of love. I love the illustration of the Amazons, their swords at the ready. Really amazing writing!

  • Stunning work, my friend

Ok this is one of the best damn poems I’ve ever read, L.C. Fantastic! Bravery in the face of pain. The line about hurting back, “draw the sword from your gut and swing it” was so powerful and invoked so much emotion from me. Loved if
