Floating contraption

Boldly defying nature

Full of hot air

*************

The hot air balloon was invented by the Montgolfier brothers of Annonay, France. Their idea was born when they noticed that when paper burns, the ashes float up into the air.

They began experimenting by filling small paper bags with smoke, then gradually scaled their experiment up to a balloon large enough to accommodate a human passenger.

The first official fully manned and untethered hot air balloon was flown by Jean-Francois Pilatre de Rozier and François Laurent d'Arlandes. They sailed over the rooftops of Paris on November 21, 1783. Notable American inventor and statesman, Benjamin Franklin was among the attendees.
