Ballerina
all I want for Christmas
brand new outdoor rink
spotlights town square
__
rounds of new diamond lights
slice through the moon’s old hat
__
shoppers scurry this way and that
exchanging trinkets for paper
or plastic
drinking complimentary hot chocolates
thumbing their cells
stalling for bathrooms
__
for her
I rent skates
for all the arms and legs
I can borrow
__
to see my baby
carve
perfect
tiny circles
graceful ballerina
head and hair pulled back
__
my heart leaps
__
she lands
smooth, making a splash
playing to parents and
teaching kids how it’s done
__
pulling her arms in close and tight
spinning round and round
dizzy with glee
__
finishing with a flourish
a thousand pairs of hands erupt,
a brilliant timpani
__
and she is at it again
chasing snowflakes
tongue out, eyes closed
writing a new letter
in ice and snow
to her favorite patron
__
“All I want for Christmas…”
