At Twilight

Fleeting Encounters

By Tales by J.J.Published 12 months ago 1 min read
Top Story - January 2025

I think I saw a smile on that face,

On that beautiful face,

Like a mirage in the desert,

Like an illusion of the sea.

I'm not sure,

But I think I saw her smile

For a split second, As we passed by.

The next day,

I had something to look forward to

When I walked back from work at twilight.

The lack of light and the anticipation of her sight,

But I saw her like a recurring dream the next day,

And again we passed by like strangers.

The next day was a holiday,

And then the dreaded Monday came.

I was caught up late at work,

The sun had already left its dock,

And twilight had turned into night,

And I thought I wouldn't see her tonight.

I thought she might have passed by at twilight,

And I walked back from work with nothing to look forward to.

But then, a beautiful shadow figure appeared across from me,

Walking toward me, my heart skipped a beat.

I think I saw a smile on that face.

PS: This one was written a long time back pls forgive my flaws .

This is a really nice poem, kind of dreamlike and hopeful. I love all the repetition about her smile.

This poem really captures the feeling of anticipation and fleeting moments—there’s something magical about how the smile, however brief, becomes a symbol of hope and connection. It builds this quiet, almost longing sense of waiting for something to happen, even if it’s just a simple glance or smile. The idea of seeing someone as a recurring presence in your daily life, even as a stranger, is really great. It’s relatable, too—the way routine can shift based on the possibility of that unexpected, heart-skipping moment. Beautifully done!

J.J, this is such a beautiful poem; it felt like a dream. Congratulations on your top story. The end bit, where you apologized for your flaws; this is not flawed, it's perfect as is.

Very beautiful and sweet. It reminded me of the story of an old man always waiting for a beautiful passerby in Goran Petrović’s "An Atlas Traced by the Sky". Congratulations on Top Story!

This is so dreamy and kind of bittersweet—I love it. The whole “I think I saw a smile” thing feels so real, like that split-second moment you keep replaying in your head wondering if it even happened. The way you described the shadow figure and the anticipation hit hard. Honestly, I feel like I’ve had moments like this too. It’s simple but leaves such an impact. Congratulations on getting top story
