It's not because you are a bad person; it's because you want to hold on to that love so badly. That's why you value his affection and constantly tolerate his criticism. You tell yourself that he's doing this for your own good, and that comforting narrative feels like the truth.

Later, you realize it's not about what's good or true. It's about the most basic respect between people. Without respect, there is no mutuality.

Without mutuality, it is impossible to be partners. Someone who truly loves you will love all of you. He can stop loving you, but he can't criticize you in the name of love. He can leave you, but he can't enjoy your kindness while also finding fault with you.
