When I was young and convinced I would grow up blonde and girly I saw a teal tailed mermaid rise from a pool littered with debris and tangy saltwater.
Her hair dripped down, glued to her chest, splashy turquoise highlights.
No seashell bra? We laughed and painted our toes her colors too.
O m g she’s learning how to talk to boys, we hissed through slits in our hands.
Someday we would too, little diamond studded ears and games of u up? hbu? wyd? until someone got what they wanted.
Pink is not the color of cool girls but we still played pink games.
I watched them gloss their nails over with sheer varnish and wondered,
wasn’t it unfair she only got the hot lifeguard?
