A Promise

for my daughter

I was an empty vessel,

Shattered by the pains this world gives.

All at once I found you and thought I lost you.

And I broke again

As every fiber of you was knit within

Somehow the pieces of me began

To form a strength I did not know

and inside of me God built a home.

A fountain broke,

and every pain I thought I knew paled in comparison

to the fight in meeting you.

I screamed.

You cried.

And suddenly I saw someone who needed me within your eyes.

While I can't promise the world, I promise this,

To be the one

you can lean on

A safe haven in a place that offers none.

I promise to love more, and yell less

To advocate on your behalf

and fight every monster that crosses your path.

I promise to never close my heart

or my ears

or my arms

Forever I am your refuge

And when you can not find home within this earth

You'll always have it with me

Unconditionally
