A HORSE RESCUER'S THOUGHTS

(discrimination of color)

By Jennifer MallochPublished 5 years ago 2 min read
One of my rescue horses

When others think of colors, there's different things they see,

I can only tell you, what colors mean to me.

Why did they abandon him, is it because he's Bay?

Would he have a better chance, if by chance he's Gray?

Palaminos running in a field, glistening in the sun,

A prized possession of color....like Pinto, Roan or Dun.

But how about that Chestnut? Why was he neglected?

How cruel is a world where by color, is how you are protected?

If their color is not desired, then desired they will not be,

This is how I tell you, what color means to me.

As a Horse Rescuer I have seen it all.....the good, the bad, the ugly,

Some left out in the cold, others in a stable snugly.

Some are fed and groomed, and have lived this way since birth,

While others are left to fend for themselves, with dry barren earth.

They stand there in the slaughter yard, a sad walking skeleton,

No meat on their bones to create dog food, so instead they're turned into gelatin.

But sometimes the lucky ones are brought to me, and given a second chance,

To me I see their beauty, while others wouldn't give them a glance.

For to me they are not defined by color, nor about steed and force,

To me they are quite simply.....a living, breathing horse.

A majestic, proud Equine......the epitomy of power for sure,

Not to be starved or neglected by humans, they deserve so much more.

My heart hurts sometimes for my rescue horses, it's not a pretty sight,

They nicker at me gently as I feed them, and are grateful for every bite.

The Vet arrives to give them treatment, and shakes his head in despair,

How can us humans show such neglect? it simply isn't fair.

And after I get them fat and healthy, with such loving care from me,

I put them on display, for all the world to see.

I proudly annonce they are ready for a new home, one that's free from harm,

It doesn't matter what color they are, they will look beautiful on your farm.

Please don't discriminate against horses, because of their color and I quote:

There is a fine line between skin color or the color of a horse's coat.
