A hero doesn't wear a cape, or fly around the skies
A hero doesn't stop a train with magic x-ray eyes
A hero doesn't save the world from disaster or despair
A hero is just someone who you wouldn't know was there
A hero is the neighbor, who comes to check on you
Or the friend you call at 2am when you don't know what to do
It's the volunteer Samaritan, waiting by the phone
Who listens when you cannot speak, so that you don't feel alone
It's the nurse who works the night shift, then walks home in the snow
It's the worker in the refuge, when you've nowhere else to go
It's the fireman who holds your hand, whilst they cut you from the car
it's the teacher who inspired you and told you'd go far
It's the lad who hands your wallet in, with all the money still inside
It's the policeman sent to tell you that your little girl has died
It's the cleaner in your office; you've never asked her name
She works 3 jobs to feed her kids, so she doesn't have to claim
It's the child who beat their cancer and gets to ring the bell
It's the woman in the witness box, reliving 20 years of hell
It's the soldier many miles from home, whose boyfriend just proposed
It's the postman who notices that your curtains are still closed
It's the guide dog who is by your side, your faithful friend and eyes
It's the partner who adores you, no matter what your shape or size
It's the man who feeds the birds each day, sitting lonely in the park
It's the stranger who walks you safely home, when you're lost and in the dark
Every street you walk along and everywhere you go
There's a hero walking past you, and you wouldn't even know
It's the angels all around us, so often in disguise
Because a hero doesn't wear a cape or fly around the skies
