A Heart Bound by Sorrow
A Poignant Ghazal by Foroughi Bastami

Foroughi Bastami, a 19th-century Persian poet, was known for his deeply emotional and melancholic poetry. His verses often express the pain of love, the agony of separation, and the endless longing for reunion. In this ghazal, the poet laments his sleepless nights, his restless heart, and the burden of love’s sorrow. He describes himself as the moon trapped in turbulent waves, with no peace or solace in sight. The poem beautifully captures the essence of a lover’s yearning—where hope remains, even in despair.
🌿 Other than love’s sorrow, no companion have I,
With a weary heart, but for midnight sighs, I rely.
💫 Like the moon, caught in restless waves,
Not a moment of peace, my heart ever craves.
✨ Eyes fixed on the road, lips whispering pain,
You left, O soul’s comfort—only sighs remain.
🌙 If you return, I shall fall at your feet in delight,
If not, then my tears shall weep through the night.
