Breaking the Depression Through the Lens
In the early 1980s, my brother graduated from high school and spent a year working for a local moving company while deciding what to do with his life. Our mother insisted that he attend a Christian college, so he looked for a school that would allow him to play baseball, and he eventually settled on Covenant College because our middle sister had discovered it and recommended it to him. Covenant is located on Lookout Mountain, Georgia, just across the state line from Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, where the famous Rock City can be found.

Old McDonald Had a Junk Yard
Throughout my childhood I was constantly asked if I could provide fries with that shake. If I had a Big Mac squirreled away in my undies, and - lord forbid - what was in my special sauce. [That one I didn't understand until a tad later in life]. Then, inevitably, that old favorite - what happened to the farm? After all, we all know Old McDonald had a farm. Parents, teachers, friends, family - all told us this obviously indisuptable fact constantly for the first few years of our lives. Even to the point of listing out the various animals which had populated said farm. This particular chuckling remark from some of the more (or less) imaginative characters which populated my toddlerhood and adolescence generally came with a grammar lesson on vowels: e,i,e,i,o ... Not sure what happened to A EWE or WHY. Regardless of the inclusion or exclusion of "a, u, or the occasional y," I'm here to tell you - Old McDonald had a junk yard. He did not have a hamburger joint with or without clowns or Cookie Monsters. Nor did he have a farm.

To some, this may only look like an old, dilapidated, worn-out barn that needs to be torn down but to me it was so much more as was the land that surrounded it. Myself and my cousins had acres upon acres upon which to grow, learn, discover and breathe. This barn and the farm around it was my escape from the hard realities of life and childhood. It was here that I could run, play, climb, scream, laugh, pretend and mostly just be myself. This barn was where I first discovered my deep connections to nature. I spent hours with my legs hanging over the edge of that loft writing my dreams, thoughts, desires and pain into my little pink diary. I sit there listening to the birds, the sounds of my Papa working on another project in his workshop, watching my Granny Woods in the fields of her garden, the smell of dirt, fresh vegetables and freshly cut wood filling my senses. When I was eight years old, the freshly cut smell of wood stopped as my Papa went on to see Jesus. We still had my granny though and after that my great Aunt Dorothy became a more frequent visitor. My cousins and myself grew up helping my great aunt and my granny shell peas, pick vegetables from the garden, take my granny's wheelbarrow to and from wherever she needed it. I learned to love the feel of the dirt under my fingernails and the smell of freshly turned dirt became a nostalgia for me.

The Pounds' Sterling. Top Story - January 2025.
This is the last picture I took of my mom before the doctors started playing Mrs. Potato Head with her through brain surgeries and radiation that killed everything except, her. That’s why it's on my childless cat lady fridge as one of my favorite moments, even though we had many, many favorite moments since that picture.

It's Just a Selfie. Runner-Up in Through the Lens Challenge. Content Warning.
It's just a selfie. A vein, shallow representation of myself. Me. Me. Me. I. I. I. That was the summer I left my ex-husband. The summer after I actually buckled down and lost some of the weight I’d been carrying around.
