humanity
Isn't it ironic that the very best of humanity is seen through the love and empathy we show to our pets?
Smartpup for Jaxon
At the beginning of this year, we had officially finished fundraising the 20 thousand dollars for my son Jaxon. We were supposed to visit Smartpups in August to meet the pup and the pup’s trainer working with my son Jaxon. The dog will be learning how to sniff out his diabetes low sugars and save his life from hypoglycaemia that can lead to serious health problems. Hypoglycaemia can cause seizures, unconsciousness, coma and even death. Due to Covid, we were unable to cross state borders due to lockdown, so we could not meet this pup; we then rescheduled for March 2022. The dog will either be a Labrador or a Golden Retriever breed. I’m not sure which puppy will be just yet as nobody picks the puppy they need to meet before a match is made.

The Case Against Pets
Why keeping a pet is fundamentally unethical As the current guardian of seven cats and two dogs whom I treasure more than words can express I was taken off guard to say the least by the strength of the case made in the piece. I have no problem accepting the ethical arguments that show conclusively in my view that the mistreatment of non human animals is morally wrong. Yet I still eat and use products derived from animals, including products that almost certainly were derived from animals whose treatment I would equate with torture. That said my intention here is not to address my obvious lack of ethical principles in this regard.

Grumpy baby hedgy
As an estranged human, you became the family I’d never had. Who knew that a creature so grumpy and prickly could win my heart over so daringly and with no shame. Before I knew it, I’d opened my numb heart to you. Your actions were underhanded. With your pink squishy belly and your random pooping habits, you had won over my affections so quickly and completely. I was entirely under your spell. And then - you left.

My Cat Shima
Author's note: The below story was originally published in November 2016. Since that time my life has taken many strange and exciting twists and I have become the guardian of many, many more cats. I have even lost some as well. Only perhaps one has touched me as much as Shima did. I still miss her dearly.

Hammie was always "my" dog.
In my “past life” I was an Animal Health Technologist and Dog Behaviouralist. Which is a fancy way of saying, I was an animal nurse and got to play with puppies all day. For the most part, I loved my job, but there was always something nagging at me under the surface. Something that never quite fit properly. I would bounce from job to job, trying to figure it out but eventually, the pattern of burnout would repeat itself and I would quit finding something else.

Our Residential Pet
At the facility that I work at, there is a lovable dog that comes in with one of our nurses. She is a big dog, always with a smile and a wagging tail. She’s always adorned with a collar with a pink bow on it. Her name is Sunny. Her name is very suitable her, as whenever she comes in, everyone lights up. I am proud to consider her a coworker.

our family will be grateful to you forever
In my country, the attitude towards pets is totally different. I would call her wild. More precisely in the Republic of Moldova (a small country between Romania and Ukraine). Dogs and cats do not stay in the house, they are not allowed to play on the bed and no one buys them nice clothes.
