humanity
Isn't it ironic that the very best of humanity is seen through the love and empathy we show to our pets?
Seraphina Ruth
Seraphina entered my life when I was just eight years old. On the day of her arrival, I ran home from the bus stop as fast as I could to meet her. She was still so small, only a couple months old. As an adult she would still be considered on the small side for a rottweiler, carrying a petite build with only ninety pounds on her. But on this day, she was so small I could pick her up and hold her in my arms. My sisters and I all sat on the floor to play with her and get to know her, but all the excitement quickly wore her out. As I sat on the hard floor with my legs crossed, she crawled right into my lap and fell asleep. I was so taken with her, with how she already trusted me enough to sleep soundly on my legs. What was I to do? I had homework and chores to get done, but this little ball of fur had felt safe enough with me to get some rest. So I sat there, occasionally petting her when her dreams seemed to tense. I couldn’t tell you how long I sat there, but it was long enough that when we finally arose from the floor, I could not feel my legs. Over her nine years of life, we would have many more nights like this. When life was too much for me, when the day was too long for her–we would comfort each other and make one another feel safe.

I’m Learning To Be Gentle With My Aging Dog
If you’ve been following me for some or most of the time I’ve been writing, you know that one of my very best friends is my little dog, Libby. Or Mooch, as she’s known to immediate family, a few friends, and some social media contacts. She lives up to that name and then some.

Beatty Suzanna
It was January 19th, 2014, when you came into my life. You were so very tiny, and no one really knew whether you were going to survive. When my friend found you and your other litter mates in a bowl under a truck in the middle of winter, hopes were not high. However, prayers sure were! She knew that the owner of that truck and bowl did not care for you; so, she rescued you all and brought you to our office.

A Man's Best Friend
Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, they tend to be our beacons when life is unbearable or heavy. Life is a struggle and dogs seem to truly understand that. Throughout my entire life, not one dog has proven that statement wrong; even the ones that bite or think your new leather furniture are gigantic chew toys. I am a groomer so I have seen all different breeds and temperaments but- What dog will always have my heart is my red Labrador Retriever. She rants like a husky, she slinks about your legs like a cat, and somehow thinks she’s a lap dog so she may literally smother you with love and kisses.

Best Reunion Of My Life
I had a hard time picking one minute with one pet. I am an animal lover and I have almost always had a pet. At 50 that adds up to a lot of really great moments. After thinking about it for a couple days I think I have picked one as maybe the most meaningful moment with any of my pets.

Papa's Pets.
My grandfather, (Papa as we've always called him, unless that is, you needed his attention, then a stern Richard would bring his head out of his bag of circus peanuts or away from the dog he was petting) built his life with calloused hands. Everything he did showed the blood and sweat he poured into it.

An Unremarkable Dog
My dog is almost entirely average, in everything except maybe his ability to drool everywhere he goes. He's never saved a drowning kid or sniffed out drugs and sent criminals to jail. It took him a long time to be house-trained, and even longer to learn how to walk with a leash. I could never take him to school, he'd get too excited and scare the kids. He chases butterfly shadows and has never caught one. He always hides our shoes.

I will always love you, Reese Peanut Butter Butt Weinerkins. Top Story - September 2022.
MY RESSEKINS. You were the best. So soft and cuddly, so warm and snuggly. You always knew what was up, and were never afraid of jumping down, no matter what height you were at. Crazy dogger.
