horse
Explore the transformative role of horses throughout human history; equines were instrumental in the spread of agriculture, language, culture, technology and more.
"Professional"
I had my first experience training an unfamiliar horse today. Now, I'm not going to lie. I felt wildly unqualified. I have hacked horses in exchange for money or even done basic training on my trainer's dressage horses, employer's reiners, and family friends' horses. I have retrained problem horses I have either bought or have been given temporarily to fix. However, I find this to be a whole different experience than showing up at a stranger's house, have them tell you what they would like to improve with their partner, then hand over the horse. Not only that, but this was groundwork. While I feel that I am more qualified than most to handle lunging, ground driving, and general obedience training, I am still in a bit over my head with this project.

It Feels Like We're Flying
A long dirt path lies ahead of us that gently curves around a corner. On one side, is a forest of densely packed trees and bushes. On the other, a wide park filled with bushes, and people. On some days, you might be lucky enough to see a few deer dotted around the park. Today was not one of those days. Maybe we'll see one later.

For Parents with Horse-Crazy Kids
Many of us may have been through that "pony stage" when growing up. When you're a star-struck little girl with an untamable passion for horses. Most parents roll their eyes and say that it will pass, but sometimes it doesn't. By a certain age, they start to think that maybe it's time to finally quench their child's thirst for horseback riding. Some give their children riding lessons or let their children volunteer at a ranch for a while. While others tend to go quickly to leasing, or even buying their children a horse of their own. Many parents may be wondering what to do. They might not know anything about horses and don't understand how to help their child. So what is the best way to get your kid around horses? I have a few tips, as the horse-crazy kid, that may help those parents who are presented with that question.

Meet The Wedgehill Three
This is Rainbow. The oldest of the Wedgehill 3 who at some thirty plus years is old enough to know better. In her dotage she is not shy of feeling feisty trotting or even cantering up and down the fence line when she knows it is time to come in at the end of the day. Nor is she shy of playing 'the matriarch'. As mares do putting the two youngsters in their place with a swift nip or even a well aimed double barrel kick at one of the two geldings if they dare to enter her personal space without an invitation.

My Riding Journey
Ever since I was a little kid I wanted to ride horses. I didn't ever get to because my family did not have the money to take lessons. When I was nine I had a friend that told me about a barn that you work at and get lessons in exchange and I immediately asked my mom if I could. Thankfully, she said yes and I was so happy. I worked four hours to earn a lesson. At my first lesson, I was so nervous that the person giving me a lesson had to walk next to me. After a few lessons I was able to walk around with the horse on my own. After a while they decided I was ready to trot which is the speed after a walk. I held onto the saddle for dear life. I was so scared but got the hang of it.

The Big Green Monster...
There has been a bit of a controversy surfacing in the equestrian Instagram community recently. Many popular accounts have already voiced their opinions on the current status of this popular social media practice. I admire those who are sensitive to the plight of others who are less fortunate than themselves, but many disagree in that trying to control what others post is both impractical and rude. I believe that the inequalities in our sport are unfortunate, but a largely unchangeable reality. This is why many equestrian Instagrammers are urging others to resist from posting Christmas haul videos or pictures of their gifts on social media.

The Worth of a Horse
There are many reasons as to why animals can teach us lessons better than us humans can amongst ourselves. Although it could vary from person to person; especially if you’re not an animal person. I have been around animals my whole life, and I have learned more lessons from them than I have lessons at school or anywhere else.

When The Thing You Love Makes You Sneeze
As I sniffled, sneezed, and itched last night my parents made a remark that really got me thinking. My dad said I was crazy, that there was no hobby he wouldn't give up if he was allergic to it. My mom then responded, pointing out that I don't know any other way. I have immersed myself in allergens for as long as I could remember, and have never known a life without daily pills, nasal sprays, frequent showers, and sleeping upright to battle the swelling of my nostrils.

My Animals = My Life
Ever since I was very young, I had always loved animals and got along with them a lot better than I do people. I don't know whether I just prefer our silent companions better, or I just am not a people person. All I know is that animals have always been a large part of my life.
