My Hero
After many days of staring and running my hand on the slim surface of my German and French poodle folder, my parents' friend calls my dad...It was a hot, ordinary day in Yucatán, Mexico. Driving on a bumpy road through villages and forests with my parents' friends. The sound of chatting in the car, the songs of birds in the air, and the humid breeze hitting our faces through the open window. Then, the chatting in the car slowly fades away as the driver declares that we have reached our destination. Car doors slide automatically on both sides. We hop off the transportation and walk towards a straw hut. We hear a movie playing in the room, the front door squeaks open. As the old Mexican lady shows us the way to the back room, my little sister and I squeal in excitement. In the midst of the silence, we hear barking noises growing louder and louder as the woman comes with a box. Inside the box, there were three German and French poodle mix puppies. The ones that look exactly like the poodles in my folder! The puppies were two males and one female. Our friends and us, hold the three options, discussing which one we should keep. To make the long story short, my mom chose one of the males. Full of regret, not getting the female, we drove home. As the clumsy puppy sniffs my house, we begin to discuss what his name should be.

Losing A Limb
It is a warm August afternoon. The breeze is subtle, but nonetheless alive. I allow the warm summer sun to gently hold my skin. I am sitting outside on the back patio of our new home trying to find joy in the sunshine for the first time since our move to Southern California. My earbuds pressed tightly inside of my ear. Listening to my favorite playlist, I attempt to drown out the sound of my own intrusive thoughts. While paying no mind to my physical surroundings, I suddenly hear a loud collision & sickening howl that could have only come from an injured animal. I quickly jump to my feet, now noticing that Luca is nowhere in sight. Sheer panic begins to consume me. Luca is my mischievous and most loving black lab. He is always getting into trouble and out of trouble just as fast. He is only 8 months old & my best friend. Recently Luca has figured out how to dig his way out of the yard by squeezing underneath the wrap-around privacy fence put in place to keep him safe. Sometimes I think he misses home and his freedom as much as I do.

The best office assistant
This, ladies and gentleman is Tiva May. A former coworker and I ran into each other one day, and she’d informed me that her daughters dog had some pups. Upon showing me the pics of said pups, I knew I wanted one. This sweetheart is the only one that had the brindle markings. Her siblings were all tan in color. From the day she came home with me she was keen to be at my side no matter what I was doing.

Alfie’s Story
Both my partner and I were working from home during the 2020 lockdowns, and this continued well into the new year. We were careful, and hadn’t been sick ourselves, but we lost people who were dear to us, and it taught us that life was short. For my partner, this meant doing something he’d always wanted to, but had been postponing because of work commitments – he wanted to adopt a dog.

Bindye
So there I was looking at him shaking underneath a table, watching me as a 14 year old girl excited about finally being able to have a puppy. His sisters and brothers running towards me witht their tails that had no halt. I could have easily went with one of them by my research findings- "Choose the dog that is very social. That's the way in which to find the right dog for you." My logic, but if everyone is going to choose the dog that runs to them, who is going to choose him if he is shying away. So underneath a coffee table I stretched my hands and picked up the black and white panda patterned Shih-Tzu I had fallen for. Did I make the right decision? I did. Absolutely.
