dog
It's no coincidence that a dog is a man's best friend; they're more faithful than most other animals, and more faithful than many people.
My White Spirit Dog
Thirty Years Ago: My mother had passed away two weeks earlier, and I slept on the couch most of the time, day and night. One morning, I was napping on the sofa and woke up, but I could not move or talk. I could only observe and watch my grandmother, mother, sister, and myself doing laundry in the kitchen sink. In my vision, it was a beautiful spring day. I could see outside and noticed a small black dog looking up at the three people she was with and then back over at me. It was cold and icy outside, but she appeared to glow with a beautiful white light surrounding and filling her.

Wet Noses
It was one moment - but to understand the moment, you must understand the thousands of moments before. Moments that were full of darkness and cold. The days I couldn’t get out of bed, so bad that I’d beg friends to walk my pup. Days where I barely managed to feed him and certainly didn’t feed myself. Weeks where I’d cry myself to sleep as he licked the salt away and I’d pretend he was comforting me and didn’t just love the taste.

How One Became Three
When I was a child, too young to remember much, my mom put my older brother and I in the car and took us to a stranger's house. We went to the back porch and I sat on cool, smooth concrete. Then, puppies came out. We left that stranger's house with one of those puppies. He sat in a box in the backseat, belted in, as we talked about names.

Feeding Your Pet: While we're not going to go over how to actually take care of your pet, let's talk about what they need to eat! There's no real specific recommendations for what type of diet is best for dogs or cats, but I'll offer some general guidelines below. Remember, feeding your pet is totally different than feeding yourself - pets don't have teeth, digestive systems, or bodies that process food the same way you do. What's good for you may be toxic to them. So if you'd prefer not to make any dietary modifications for your furry friend, then stick to these tips.

Fizzi's First Valentine
Fizzi is my little seven-pound applejack, meaning he is half apple head chihuahua and half Jack Russell terrier. I brought him home when he was eight days old. Right away he had me wrapped around his tiny paw. Having Fizzi is like having a baby that will never grow up and I spoil him just as much as I did my two children when they were babies.

Misty
Warmth and a faint musky scent of vanilla that came from old paper surround me. Smooth gray-brown bark blended into rougher sections of a split-trunk tree against my back. Splotches of summer sunlight danced through the leaves. I am leaning against the left trunk with my feet braced against the right. At the base of the tree is a plastic igloo once white is now more of a dusty gray. Next to it lays a husky, my husky. She has pale red fur mixing with creamy white and stormy-blue eyes. Mom had shaved her fur at the beginning of summer but it’s grown back some. Around her neck hangs a teal collar with a name tag reading Misty.

The Graduation Present
He awoke at first light and flung his arm over the edge of the bed in a panic and felt for her. She was where he had left her the night before. She had not stirred nor moved. He pressed his face against the pillow with all the hope and dread of the world joined in an infinite second and laid flat his palm to her belly and cast aside his atheism to approach prayer. Her soft fur rose and fell, briefly and shallow but a breath at that. He looked over the bed and stared longingly at her and she on her side half turned her head to meet his gaze and ask of him what he wanted.

The Loss of Our Dog During the Pandemic
You may find it peculiar that when prompted to write about a fond memory with a pet, I chose to describe the day our 15-year-old Bichon Frise crossed the Rainbow Bridge. It would be impossible to pick one moment in time that stands out above the rest, but that day—that sad…and emotional….and inevitable final day, will be forever embedded in my mind—and perhaps not necessarily for the reasons you might think.

Meet Pugsly
Meet Pugsly, a dog with shoes. Pugsly is a pit, chow, and grey hound mix. He has a V8 block engine head and lock jaw from the pit, his brown and tan coat is full and fluffy thank to the chow, but underneath all his fluff he is very slender like a grey hound. He is also very fast for seventy pounds. Pugsly is currently seven years old. Thankfully his bark is solid and loud which makes him sound like a junkyard guard dog because he is so sweet and gentle.
