Our guide to animal adoption; learn why, where, and how to prepare to adopt a cat, kitten, dog or puppy from an animal shelter or rescue group.
Picked up at the Shop
I picked Kitt up at the shop...Yes, I named him Kitt (after a car, not because he's a cat) and no, I didn't pick him up at the pet shop. I also didn't adopt Kitt in the fashion most think of. You see, he appeared out of no where one winter morning while I was working at a John Deere dealer as a mechanic (there's the shop part of it). He was wandering around the mowers on display out front and was curious about what I was doing.

Outlaw Dog Duo
One day in 2003 I arrived at my Dad’s house for the weekend. What I did not know is that this weekend would be much different than any other before. As I got my bags unloaded from the truck he told me to let him get inside the house first so he could check on something. A few moments later he told me and my sister we could come inside. He then told us to go look out onto the back porch. As we got ready to open the door to the back porch, we saw through the window on the door two goofy and excited basset hounds waiting for us to come outside and play.

Ruby
Every pet I’ve ever had had been a rescue, either from the shelter or stray I wanted to nurse back to health. Strays deserve just as much love and attention as any other animal, and probably more. From cats, to dogs, and birds to rodents, if I find it injured, I’m giving it a home or finding it one after I get it back to good health. I’ve saved a chihuahua from a puppy mill, named her Kiki and turned the puppy mill in. I’ve saved a kitten from a dumpster and named her Meow Meow. On Halloween when we were trick or treating we found a kitten malnourished with worms and an upper respiratory infection and named her BooBoo. And all of these I kept. A kitten I found abandoned by its mother was too far gone and couldn’t be saved. I cried. All of these babies I kept. But Ruby is another story altogether.

Raising My Humans
Raising My Humans Being a certified rescue dog is never easy, you never know where your next stop will be, if you’ll be loved or used, and for me how easy will the humans be to raise? I’ve been in homes with children, adults and even other dogs and I abhor the latter, they are beasts, unable to grasp my philosophies of raising the humans. Hell I rather hang with a group of cats, they understand that humans are staff, they work for us, not vice versa, but other dogs, incompetent and lazy, in my humble opinion. This time I stumbled into a home with just two humans, both older, but that doesn’t necessarily mean easier, they are set in their ways and I have to start from scratch.

Wee, Wee, Wee..All the Way Home
I never in a million years expected I would be the kind of person to love pigs. I never disliked pigs. I always thought they were cute, but I never figured I would ever be in a situation where pigs would be part of my regular routine and yet, like so many other things that happen here on Crow's Croft Farm, I have been given the opportunity to surprise myself.

Finding "The One"
Growing up, I was fortunate to have a dad who loved animals. We had dogs, hedgehogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, deer, horses, goats, exotic birds, and the list goes on from there. It's funny how I had a lot more freedom than other kids when it came being able to have seemingly whatever pet I wanted, yet I was fixated on the one animal my dad never let me keep - a cat.

The Great Escape
12:00 PM: I am feeling grumpy. My companion is relentless, always making some kind of raucous. It is hot. The blazing sun has dried all the surrounding dirt to dust. It is, quite literally, the dog days of summer. It is August of 2010, and in southeast Georgia the summertime heat is suffocating, for it is not just hot, but humid, too.

A Pet Adopting
"Meow" If they think that this cage is so much better than being able to run around outside then they ought to come live in here, thought FM 1854. FM 1854 lived at 1855 Windish Drive in Galesburg Illinois from October until December of 2000 and he was one of many young to old aged felines that were there. Unlike the dogs, the cats rarely got outside much and were confined to an eighteen by twelve enclosure that was jokingly called a sanctuary. For FM 1854, he wondered what this so-called sanctuary was from because he missed being able to run around doing whatever he wanted.
