Small Rabbit = Big Trouble?
The Positive and Negative Aspects of Having a Decorative Rabbit in Your Apartment

Having a pet at home is a big dream for many people. Some think about house pets every day—or even every hour. I’m no exception.
When I was 10 years old, my parents gave me my first pet: a guinea pig named Kuza. I was incredibly excited, since I had dreamed of having a pet for a long time. (Of course, my biggest dream was to have a dog, but we lived in a small apartment.)
I loved every moment with Kuza, but after about six months, I started having allergic reactions. It was a really difficult time—we had to find a new home for Kuza and adjust to life without a pet.
More than a year later, we decided to try again and got a house rabbit. Looking back, I can say it was the perfect decision. This small, quiet animal brought a lot of happiness into my life. Over the years, I’ve had three rabbits, and my third one is currently living with me in my one-room apartment, where I live with my boyfriend.
Based on my personal experience living with a decorative rabbit, I’d like to share my story. In this article, I’ll talk about why we chose a rabbit, the pros and cons of having one, and a few life hacks I hope will make your daily routine with this quiet pet a little easier.
Why a Rabbit Again?
Oops, I did it again—I decided to have a rabbit! But this time, it wasn’t entirely my decision.

After six months of living with my boyfriend, I felt like it was time for a small change. I suggested the idea of getting a pet. It was a complicated decision since we live in a rented apartment, and our landlord had originally said no pets allowed. Still, we decided to ask if we could have a small animal that would live in a cage—something like a rabbit, rat, or guinea pig. To our surprise (and excitement), the landlord agreed!
Then came an unexpected offer: my parents suggested we take my rabbit Archi to live with us. So now, it’s been two months since Archi joined us in our one-room apartment. And I can confidently say: this small pet has had a big impact on our lives and our relationship.
How Archi Changed Our Daily Life (In a Good Way!)
🐰 Shared Responsibility
Every morning and evening, we feed and pet Archi. It naturally changed our routines and helped us be more mindful of our shared life.
🍽️ Thinking Beyond Ourselves
Now we’re not only thinking about what we want to eat—we’re also planning Archi’s meals and snacks. It’s a sweet reminder that someone else depends on us.
🎮 Daily Playtime
We spend about an hour each day playing with Archi. Watching him hop around, explore, or loaf like a fuzzy potato has become a highlight of our day.
🧘 Bunny Therapy
We have what we call “Archi therapy” every evening—just sitting together, watching him chew hay or stretch out, and letting go of the day’s stress.

Is a Rabbit the Perfect Pet?
For us—absolutely. Archi is quiet, clean, and fits perfectly into our small space and lifestyle. He’s helped us build better routines, communicate more, and even laugh more.
If you're considering a pet for apartment living, a decorative rabbit might just be the fluffy, gentle companion you didn’t know you needed.
🟢 Pros and 🔴 Cons of Having a Rabbit in an Apartment
Let’s start with the positives:
✅ They live in a cage, which makes landlords more likely to approve them compared to cats or dogs.
✅ They’re super clean and don’t have a strong odor.
✅ They’re not aggressive—great if you have kids.
✅ They can learn simple commands if you train them consistently.
✅ They’re very friendly and enjoy bonding with their humans (especially if you have treats!).
✅ They’re relatively affordable—no expensive grooming or high vet bills most of the time.
And now, a few downsides to be aware of:
🔴 They chew—on everything. (Archi recently chewed through our vacuum cleaner cord, and yes, I was very angry!)
🔴 They shed frequently, so get ready for fur on your clothes, furniture, and just about everywhere else.
🔴 They need space to move. If your apartment is very small, think carefully before bringing one home—they need room to hop and play.
🧠 Life Hacks for Living with a Rabbit
If you’re ready to welcome a rabbit into your home, here are a few tips from my own experience that will make life easier (for both of you!):
📅 Feed your rabbit twice a day at the same time – Routine creates a sense of security and understanding.
🏃 Let them run – Rabbits need movement. Archi spends around two hours a day running freely in our room.
🧹 Clean the cage weekly – Rabbits are clean animals, and they appreciate a tidy space.
📦 Make tunnels from cardboard boxes – It’s cheap, easy, and your rabbit will love it!
🗣️ Talk to your rabbit – They recognize your voice and emotions. Sometimes, it feels like Archi is the best listener in the world.
💗 Pet them, play with them, love them – A happy rabbit is a healthy rabbit. The love you give is returned in those gentle nose boops and soft bunny flops.

Final Thoughts
Having a rabbit isn’t just about having a cute animal in a cage—it’s about building a small world with a furry friend who depends on you. While there are a few challenges, the joy, comfort, and calm that a rabbit like Archi brings into our home far outweigh the downsides.
So, is a small rabbit big trouble?
Sometimes.
But most of the time—it’s just big love.
