Meeting My First furbaby

our first day

By JayPublished about a year ago 5 min read

Well where do i begin, I’ve never had a pet before. And yet now I have a eleven month old kitten whom I’ve had since she was just under six months old.

It’s been a turbulant five months. Learning how to take care of her, getting her spayed and microchipped, learning her different vocalisations etcetra.

So let me tak you back to the beginning, i was scared of cats. Absolutely terrified. Yet when a friend suggested me getting one, i kinda laughed the idea off. Then another friend suggested it, then they tag teamed bouncing the idea off of me till i said id look into it. I didn’t mean to follow through, i just meant to do a little digging just to satisfy them. But then i saw this cute as a button little black angel of a kitten who looked so small next to a normal sized spray bottle. Her bright yellow big eyes captivated me, and suddenly my fear was gone and a longing replaced it. So i reached out to who is now the original owner. Turns out after a little chatting we were in the same year at high school. And she was willing to sell Kahlua to me, but her circumstances saddened me, so when i withdrew the money for kahlua i withdrew a little extra for her family. Just to soften the blow of losing their adorable little one.

so after arranging to meet up that Friday i bought all i needed from pets at home, to set up my home to kitten proof it. A litter box, a cat carrier, a bed, a blanket, toys, you name it i bought it. I didn’t know what to expect despite having two very experienced friends with cats. I forgot to ask them for advice till after my purchases, and then had to purchase more due to not having bought some of the right things. Which I didn’t mind, as i was learning. So i kitten proofed the bungalow, as much as i could anyways. I also had a harness ready to bring with me, and booked the taxi to pick me up to take me there and then one to pick me up to take me home. I was so nervous I didn’t sleep the night before going, after all my being terrified of cats came back with a vengeance. But i knew from what the original owner had said that it wasn’t a situation where she could keep Kahlua and give her the best life possible. I knew i could try my best too with the help of my family and friends.

So i get to the original owners place, and there’s steps. I forgot to mention, I’m physically disabled, usually using a 4 wheeled rollator to get around. But I decided seeing as the cat carrier couldn’t balance on the rollator that i would go with just one walking stick, and do my best not to fall. I didn’t expect steps. So i went slow and steady up them, trying not to get off balance by the cat carrier in my other hand. The original owner, was standing at her door and asked if she could help in any way, and we embraced once i got on level ground. As we were friends at high school for a while anyways. So she asked if i wanted to meet her, i said yes and was introduced to a very small kahlua. She was pure black, with bright yellow big eyes and large ears for her small head. She sniffed my offered hand, and meowed, as she rubbed her head against my hand then suddenly she rolled onto her back and allowed me to rub her tummy. I was startled as i always took this to mean that the person near them wasn’t seen as a threat, yet this sweet little kitten was doing this to a complete stranger? I fell in love and vowed i would look after her,

so i got my friend to fill out some details whilst i met kahuas mother cat, but never got to meet the father as he had already been rehomed. I was a little annoyed to find out she hadn’t had her vaccines but my friend said as she had been an indoor cat all her life she hadn’t needed them. So i made a mental note to mention this to the vet that i had booked to see that following Monday. She hadn’t been spayed or microchipped either and it was now cumpulsory to get cats microchipped so i knew i needed to get that done as well. I didn’t need a litter of kittens should kahlua escape and return pregnant. Me and my friend spend a bit of time talking and then as it approached time for me to be leaving I asked advice for how to pick her up. And my friend sadly showed me, then let me pick her up for the first time and put her in the carrier i had brought with me. The meowing began as soon as the door was shut. Kahlua did not like the carrier, but this was to be expected. She’d never left the home before and never needed to be transported anywhere.

My friend offered to carry Kahlua in the carrier down the steps and wait for the taxi with me as we went out roughly 5 minutes too early, just in case they were early. I took her up on the offer, as kahlua turned out to weigh more in the carrier than i expected and nearly threw me off balance just walking on the level. Once the taxi arrived i promised my friend id keep her up to date on how kahlua was forever. A promise I’m yet to break. We embraced one last time and i put kahlua into the taxi, followed by myself. There was no way to get a seat belt around the carrier so i held onto it. Not letting it move. Kahlua was very vocal, obviously not liking the situation one bit. She was vocal the whole thirty minutes home.

when we got to my place, i closed all doors apart from the main bedroom, which would also double as her bedroom, and opened the crate in the hallway, she didn’t make a move to get out of the carrier, so i opened up the carr9er fully, still no movement came from kahlua. She was scared stiff. So i sat on the floor petting her, lifted her from the bottom of the crate and put her on the carpet. She moved slowly into the bedroom and i put the carrier back together. And she had used the litter box by the time i got in the room. Which made me very happy and very proud, as this was her first time in the new environment with new litter and a new litter box.

And this was just the start of our journey
